Dodgers beat Astros 3-1, force World Series to Game 7

  • The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Houston Astros 3-1, forcing a Game 7 in the World Series.
  • This will be the third World Series Game 7 in four years.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Joc Pederson sliced a drive over the left-field wall, pounded his chest and danced around the bases, taking as many twists and turns as this World Series itself. Of course, the Los Angeles Dodgers forced the Houston Astros to Game 7.

Chris Taylor hit a tying double off Justin Verlander during a two-run rally in the sixth inning, Corey Seager followed with a go-ahead sacrifice fly and the Dodgers beat the Astros 3-1 on Tuesday night to push this dramatic Fall Classic to the ultimate game.

Pederson homered in the seventh against Joe Musgrove, connecting off the right-hander for the second time in three games to make it a record 24 long balls hit in this Series. Pederson pranced all the way to the plate, pointing at the Dodgers' dugout and rubbing his thumbs and index fingers together to indicate what a money shot it was.

Mired in a major slump earlier this season, Pederson was demoted to the minors — and teammates began offering to pay him for opposite-field home runs in an effort to get him to hit the ball the other way.

"I kind of black out in a situation like that," said Pederson, who has three homers in the Series. "I'm going to have to re-watch it to see what I did."

Yu Darvish starts Wednesday for the Dodgers, trying to win their first title since 1988, and Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw will be ready in the bullpen. Lance McCullers Jr. goes for the Astros in the first World Series Game 7 ever at Dodger Stadium.

"It's only fitting," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.

Darvish was chased in the second inning of Game 2, when McCullers pitched Houston to a 5-3 victory.

"Two incredible teams, trying to get to the finish line," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said.

Two nights after a 13-12, 10-inning slugfest under the roof at Minute Maid Park, pitching dominated.

George Springer's third-inning home run against starter Rich Hill had given a 1-0 lead to Verlander and the Astros, trying for the first championship in their 56-season history. On Halloween night, a championship for a team with orange in its colors seemed appropriate.

But it served only to set up the 10th blown lead of the Series, the fifth by Houston, as Verlander fell to 9-1 with Houston.

Dodgers relievers combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings. Brandon Morrow retired Alex Bregman on a grounder to strand the bases loaded in the fifth, winner Tony Watson got Marwin Gonzalez to fly out with two on and two outs in the sixth, and Kenta Maeda escaped two-on trouble in the seventh when third baseman Justin Turner gloved Jose Altuve's grounder and threw a one-hop throw that first baseman Cody Bellinger scooped just in time.

After wasting a ninth-inning lead in Game 2 and losing Game 5, Kenley Jansen retired six straight batters for the save and ended by striking out 40-year-old pinch-hitter Carlos Beltran.

This will be the third World Series Game 7 in four years. Ten of the last 12 teams that won Game 6 to force a seventh game also won the title, but the Dodgers lost the previous six World Series in which they trailed 3-2. They have won just one of their six championships at home, in 1963.

A heat wave over, the temperature dropped to 67 degrees at game time from 103 for last week's opener. The San Gabriel Mountains were occluded by heavy clouds.

Los Angelenos with a laid-back reputation were more energetic and on their feet for two-strike counts against Astros batters, a wave in Pantone 294 — also known as Dodger blue. Stadium organist Dieter Ruehle greeted the Astros with "Hotel California" for the start of batting practice, but there was an un-LA-like drizzle in the middle innings.

"We feed off the crowd, for sure," Taylor said. "We feel we have a huge home-field advantage."

Yuli Gurriel, who made a racist gesture toward Darvish in Game 3, was booed loudly during introductions and each time he batted,

Verlander has 11 postseason wins but dropped to 0-4 in the Series with Detroit and Houston, which acquired him from the Tigers on Aug. 31 to win on nights like this.

The 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner, Verlander allowed just one baserunner before Austin Barnes singled leading off the sixth. Verlander bounced a pitch that hit Chase Utley on the front of his right foot, and Taylor sent a 97 mph fastball down the right-field line as Barnes came home. Seager followed with a sacrifice fly to the right-field warning track, a ball that likely would have landed in the pavilion in last week's hot air.

Verlander prevented more damage when Turner fouled out and the right-hander fanned Bellinger, who struck out four times for the second time in the Series.

Springer homered for the third straight game and fourth time in the Series, one shy of the record set by Reggie Jackson in 1977 and matched by Chase Utley in 2009. While it silenced the Dodger Stadium crowd, Astros fans erupted at a watch party in Minute Maid Park. Los Angeles has allowed home runs in all 14 of its postseason games.

Brian McCann singled leading off the fifth and Gonzalez doubled past Turner and down the left-field line. Hill struck out Josh Reddick and Verlander, and Springer was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Morrow relieved as the crowd booed Roberts' decision, and Hill slapped at four cups of liquid in the dugout, sending them spraying against the wall.

"With Verlander on the mound, I felt that was going to be the game," Roberts said.

Appearing in his sixth straight Series game, Morrow got Bregman to ground to shortstop on his second pitch.

Watson walked Reddick leading off the seventh, Evan Gattis pinch hit for Verlander and Maeda relieved. Gattis bounced to shortstop, just beating Utley's throw from second to avoid a double play. Springer reached on an infield single that bounced off Seager's glove at shortstop and into left field, and Bregman's fly to deep center allowed pinch-runner Derek Fisher to tag up and advance to third, bringing up Altuve. Walking down the dugout steps after his groundout, Altuve slammed his helmet.

Los Angeles Dodgers break Houston Astros' home spell in 6-2 win

HOUSTON (Reuters) - The Los Angeles Dodgers, playing with their backs against the wall for the first time all year, sprang back to life with a five-run ninth inning on Saturday to beat the Houston Astros 6-2 and level the World Series at two games apiece.

With Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw set to take the mound for Sunday's pivotal Game Five in Houston, the best team in baseball all season are suddenly back on track in their quest for a first World Series title since 1988.

"It's now a three-game series, and we've got our ace going tomorrow. So I know that in our clubhouse we feel good," said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.

The Dodgers, who breezed through regular season and into World Series, were staring at a potential 3-1 series deficit until Cody Bellinger's bat came alive when he doubled and scored the tying run in the seventh inning.

Bellinger, who had been hitless in his previous 13 plate appearances, then put the Dodgers ahead in the ninth with a run-scoring double as part of a five-run inning that was capped by Joc Pederson's three-run blast.

"We've been doing it all year. We're a super resilient team," said Bellinger, whose Dodgers are now guaranteed to host a Game Six on Tuesday. "Taking one here to make sure we go back to LA is huge."

The game had been a tight affair as both teams got stellar outings from their starting pitchers.

Dodgers left-hander Alex Wood was working on a no-hitter when George Springer opened the scoring with a two-out homer in the sixth that ended the pitcher's night. The Dodgers responded an inning later when a Logan Forsythe scored single Bellinger.

"I was glad to keep us in it long enough to where our bats came alive. That felt like us there those last few innings," said Wood. "It's a big win for us. We've got our guy going tomorrow, so we're excited to be able to take it back to LA, too."

Houston's Charlie Morgan was nearly as impressive as he allowed just three hits in 6-1/3 innings.

The Astros sent closer Ken Giles out for the ninth and he promptly allowed a single to Corey Seager, a walk to Justin Turner before Bellinger put the Dodgers ahead.

"He hadn't faced those guys a ton, but they didn't have good swings against him in LA," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said of Giles. "One ground-ball base hit to start the inning and things sort of sped up on him a little bit, the walk after that."

With the Astros down to their final strike, Alex Bregman homered to left but it proved too little too late as Houston's unbeaten home stretch in the postseason ended at seven games.

Why millions of Chinese people are filing for divorce every year

by Zhuang Pinghui on Oct 31, 2017, 11:40 PM

  • Divorce is no longer social taboo in China.
  • 1.85 million couples registered for divorce with the government in the first six months of 2017, an increase of more than 10% compared to the same period in 2016.
  • Domestic violence and extramarital affairs are the leading causes of divorce in China.

When Zhou Ying from Guangzhou ended her 10-year marriage last year she felt a weight lift from her shoulders.

Not only did the 38-year-old get custody of her eight-year-old son, as well as possession of the family flat and a substantial portion of their shared savings, she no longer had to face the constant arguments that had become a feature of her marriage.

There was little romance left between Zhou and her husband, and eventually the relationship became too exhausting for both of them, she said.

“We were in love at first sight and it will always leave a scar that the relationship ended in divorce, but I think it is less painful than if we hated each other and let the boy live in a hostile environment,” Zhou said. “Financially I can support me and my boy. My quality of life is not affected.”

Unlike older generations who may have settled for an unhappy marriage, divorce is no longer socially taboo in China.

Couples can either register a divorce with the civil affairs authority, indicating they have agreed to go their separate ways, or they can sue for divorce through the courts, which can rule on custody of children and how to dispose of any assets.

In the first six months of this year, 1.85 million couples registered for divorce with the civil affairs authority alone, an increase of more than 10 percent compared with the same period last year.

divorce

Three decades ago, in 1986, 460,000 couples registered their divorces with the civil affairs authority – the most common route taken. By 2016, that annual number had risen to 4.15 million.

The average age at which people in China get married is 26, according to a 2015 survey by the All-China Women’s Federation.

Many relationship experts and lawyers put the rising divorce rate down to higher expectations and growing financial independence, especially among women.

But buried in the sharply climbing statistics lies a darker truth: domestic violence and extramarital affairs together are the leading causes of divorce in China.

Beijing No 2 Intermediate People’s Court said in March that 93 percent of its divorce cases in the past year involved domestic violence or extramarital affairs.

A survey by Jiayuan, a dating website and service provider, in April found 18 percent of divorced female members attributed domestic violence as the cause. Thirty-eight percent of female divorcees said they were divorced because their husband cheated on them. For their male counterparts, 25 percent said they had been cheated on and 2 percent cited abuse.

Forty-one percent of divorced members had ended their marriage within the first five years.

Lu Xiaoquan, director of Beijing Qianqian Law Firm, said most of the 1,200 legal consultation requests the firm and organization received since its establishment involved domestic violence and extramarital affairs.

Lu’s firm is linked to the non-governmental women rights organization Beijing Zhongze Women Legal Aid Centre.

“Some spouses grew up in a family where domestic violence was prevalent and continued the bad behavior when they grew up. The social environment was highly tolerant of domestic violence, too,” Lu said.

A relationship expert in Jiayuan, who wished to remain anonymous, said domestic violence included physical action as well as lashing out emotionally and “cold violence” represented by neglect or a lack of communication.

Ruby Xu, a 32-year-old health worker in Beijing who is in the process of filing for divorce, said she felt like she had been trapped in an endless nightmare.

She constantly suffered from verbal abuse from her husband, whom she married just months after first meeting him.

She became pregnant soon after they married but was left alone in hospital for weeks when she suffered complications that threatened the baby’s life.

China sad

The abuse escalated to physical a month after she give birth. Her husband usually picked on her for trivial things such as when she bought a medicine prescribed by doctor without telling him, or if she did not rush to the baby the second the infant started crying. He would get very emotional while yelling at her and started to beat her, Xu said.

She tried to endure the abuse for the sake of the baby, but finally decided to divorce her husband after she sustained a skull contusion during a beating. She was thrown out of home and barred from seeing her son.

“I miss my boy so much that sometimes I wait outside my old home in the hope of catching a glimpse of him being taken out to play. It is a very cruel thing not let a mother see her child,” Xu said. “The past three years have been the most painful time of my life. My only hope is for the divorce to grant me custody so I can live with my son again.”

Xu’s divorce case has gone through two hearings and she is now waiting for the decision.

Zhang Qihuai, director of the Lanpeng Law Firm in Beijing, has worked on more than 200 divorce cases in his career. He said the Beijing court’s estimate that 93 percent of its cases involve domestic violence or extramarital affairs matched his experience.

Zhang represented Wang Baoqiang, a migrant worker-turned actor, in the country’s most high-profile divorce in recent years.

The movie star posted on his Weibo account in August last year that he was seeking a divorce because his wife Ma Rong had cheated on him with his agent.

Ma, who insists there is more to the story, although she has yet to give further details, is suing Wang for tarnishing her reputation in a case that is still ongoing.

China

“Due to the influence of western culture, couples are pursuing romantic relationships. They are more financially capable of taking their lovers to restaurants and to hotels. Social networks also make finding one-night stands much easier,” Zhang said.

Zhang said couples had raised the bar for their romantic relationships, and were more focused on the “spiritual aspects” of life.

“[Marriage] used to be about providing a stable family structure to ensure the elderly and young children were looked after, but not any more,” Zhang said.

One court in Jinan, Shandong province, has tried to stem the rising tide of divorce by imposing a three-month cooling-off period for couples to think their decision over, according to Xinhua.

Li Jiang, a judge at the district court in Sizhong where the practice started, said he felt a sound family background could have made a difference for some of the juvenile criminals the court tried.

As many as 700 out of every 1,000 cases the court handled were divorces, but the judges believed couples were too quick to seek to end their marriages when they should be working through their disagreements.

They said sometimes the decision had been made in a rush or as a result of parental interference.

At the end of the cooling-off period, couples can either file for divorce as planned or request that their term of contemplation be extended.

A terror attack Tuesday in New York City killed at least eight people and injured 11 others, after a truck drove down a busy Manhattan bike lane.

The suspect, whom media reports have identified as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov, crashed into a school bus and pulled out fake firearms before he was shot by police and taken into custody, police said.

Here's how the scene unfolded on Tuesday.
