A massive sinkhole opened in the middle of a London suburb

by Stephen Parkhurst and Jacob Shamsian on Oct 2, 2015, 9:10 AM

A massive sinkhole just opened in the middle of a residential street outside London. The huge sinkhole opened Thursday in the UK city of Saint Albans. 20 people had to evacuate their homes, but no one was hurt.

Sinkholes form when the earth beneath the surface erodes, but the surface itself stays intact...until it doesn't. This one is about 33 feet deep, and twice as wide. For now, 52 properties can't get gas, electricity, or water. The local council was actually supposed to fill in a small hole in the same spot Thursday. Now they've got a much bigger hole to deal with.
