On-demand services are quickly becoming mainstream across industries of commerce. For example, nearly one in four Americans have used an on-demand car service like Uber or Lyft, and one in five say they've used a home rental service such as Airbnb or HomeAway. But what do these consumers look like?

According to a recent study conducted by Burson Marsteller, Penn Schoen Berland, and the Aspen Institute:

  • Customers of on-demand services tend to skew younger. 43% of millennials have used such services, compared to only 28% of Gen Xers who have.
  • They also tend to live in coastal states and earn a higher than average income. The majority of Americans who use on-demand services live in the country's coastal states and earn more than $50,000 annually.

The fact that so many young, high-earning consumers use on-demand services suggests that companies like Uber and Airbnb will become fixtures in their respective industries — transportation and travel. One-fourth of the US population falls under the millennial age group, and by 2020 they will account for an estimated 30% of retail spending, according to data from the US Census Bureau and Nielsen.
