The best places to go apple picking near New York City

Without apples we wouldn’t have some of the best treats out there: apple pie, cider, hard cider, cider donuts — basically all of your fall favorites.

So, if you’re looking to get away this weekend, why not spend some time picking apples? We rounded up some of the best places near New York City to get away for the weekend and come home with a bushel full of fall's favorite fruit.

Make sure to go before it's too late; apple picking season winds down near the end of October.

1. Applewood Orchards and Winery

Applewood Winery

For those wanting to spend the weekend drinking wine and eating apples, head to Applewood Orchards, which also happens to be a winery.

Located in the heart of Hudson Valley, the orchard also has plenty of attractions, including an herb and rose garden, wagon rides, puppet shows, and (of course) freshly pressed apple cider.

There is no admission, parking, or entertainment fees — you simply pay for the apples you take.

Applewood Orchards is located at 82 Four Corners Road, Warwick, NY

2. Greig Farm

Greig FarmGreig's has been open to the public for over 60 years. The farm is open everyday from 9am to 7pm rain or shine, and visitors have their choice of picking both fruits and vegetables depending on the time of year.

Currently, the farm is offering blackberries and plenty of apple varieties for picking.

Greig also hosts the Hudson Valley Farmer's Market every Saturday in a century-old barn. It's a great opportunity to grab some eggs, cheeses, meats, fish, or flowers to go with whatever you just finished picking.

Greig Farm is located on Pitcher Lane, Red Hook, NY

3. Fishkill Farm

Fishkill Farms

This apple orchard has been in the same family for nearly 100 years. Fishkill’s mission is to combine the historical identity of the “u-pick” orchard with sustainable farming methods.

They have Harvest Festival Weekends all through October, where they offer homemade food, donuts, cider, hayride, and live music. With views of the Catskills, you can relax while listening to live music and eating homemade pies.

Plus, you can pick peaches and nectarines if apples aren't your thing.

Fishkill Farm is located at 9 Fishkill Farm Road, Hopewell Junction, NY

4. Barton Orchards

Barton OrchardsBarton Orchards offers 122 acres and 25 varieties of apples, as well as a petting zoo and weekend hayrides for the kids. There's even a haunted house all throughout October.

The farm is open from 9am to 5pm every day, and there are multiple dining options on site. Their bakery sells fresh apple cider donuts, there's a kitchen that serves burgers, chili, hot dogs, and more, along with a tap room for adults, and a farm market that includes a fudge counter.

There are also plenty of events throughout the year, such as a pumpkin festival.

Bartons is located at 63 Apple Tree Lane, Poughquag, New York

5. Wright’s Apple Farm

Wrights Farms

This 453-acre farm produces 100,000 bushels of apples annually. They also grow a variety of other fruits, including cherries, peaches, plums, and nectarines

The farm also has a roadside farmer's market that's open year-round and a bakery that makes assortments of pies every day — and plenty of pumpkins.

Wright’s Apple Farm is located at 669 State Route 208, Gardiner, NY

6. Hurds Family Farm

Hurds Family FarmHurds has been a true family farm for seven generations.

Home to more than just apple picking, the farm is a great place to seek out a Christmas tree, find your way through the corn maze, or go for a ride on the cow-train.

There are multiple farm-to-table products to choose from at Hurds' stores, and even an apple cafe that sells all kinds of unique snacks featuring apples.

Hurds Family Farm is located at 2187 Route 32 Modena, New York

7. Masker Orchards

Masker Orchards

Masker’s has been around for over 100 years and has a 200-acre orchard chock full of apples for the taking.

They are located in the middle of the Hudson Valley, and are a good option for young families since they offer plenty of fun options for children, including barnyard baby animals as well as pony and wagon rides.

Masker Orchard is located at 45 Ball Rd, Warwick, NY

8. Stuart’s Fruit Farm

Stuart's Fruit Farm

Stuart’s has been a family-operated farm since 1828, and grows 14 different varieties of apples for picking in October.

They also have hayrides on the weekends and a pumpkin patch so you can enjoy all your favorite fall activities in one place.

Lena Dunham reveals what it's like to be in a room with Hillary Clinton

by Aly Weisman on Sep 30, 2015, 11:57 AM

Lena Dunham's new feminist newsletter, Lenny, launched Tuesday and included a lengthy interview with Hillary Clinton.

But it's not easy to schedule a sit down with the busy politician.

"I basically had to be like, 'I will cancel anything,'" Dunham tells INSIDER of how the interview came to be. "We feel busy, but when we look at her schedule, we're people who just, like, work part-time in a gift shop."

Dunham's interview with Clinton was months in the making.

HRC"I went in to talk to Hillary's people about offering support for the campaign and let them know about Lenny," explains Dunham. "They were really open to the idea of Hillary using it as a platform to express her thoughts on everything from your 20s to feminism to issues that are of large concern for any readership."

Eventually, "We flew to New York, we made it work on her terms, very happily," explains Lenny co-founder and "Girls" producer, Jenni Konner.

Dunham and Konner say they were surprisingly nervous once they got to New York for the interview.

"I have never felt so nervous and I was just directing it," says Konner. "I was not expecting to feel that way but she has a really intense presence and you could feel it when she walked into the building, so yeah it was terrifying and also very out of our wheelhouse."

Adds Dunham: "You're definitely pressed to move fast, she doesn't have a lot of time. We were told, 'The minute she comes down start rolling, get into it, because she has places to be.'"

But once Clinton entered the room, the vibe changed.

"We weren't expecting her to be quite as at ease as when she came downstairs," says Dunham. "She walked in and we were expecting it to be sit down and slam those questions in, but instead she was like, 'Ladies, it's great to see you!' And that disarmed us to the max."

"She was not politician-y at all, actually," adds Konner. "She was very warm, it was disarming, really. It felt very intimate, she was very candid with us and talked so much about the vulnerable times in her life that it felt like listening to an actual friend which was really surprising and exciting."

"They [Clinton's team] were incredibly collaborative," says Dunham. "They weren't controlling, they didn't vet our questions, they really gave us a chance to have journalistic freedom."

In the interview released Tuesday, Clinton discusses everything from working odd jobs in Alaska before law school to a sexy but controversial dress she wore at the White House in 1993.

The new WHO guidelines just raised the number of people who should be taking HIV medication by millions

by Stephanie Nebehay on Sep 30, 2015, 11:55 AM

GENEVA (Reuters) — The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday that all people with the HIV virus should be given anti-retroviral drugs as soon as possible after diagnosis, meaning 37 million people worldwide should be on treatment.

The WHO, in a statement expanding current guidelines, said recent clinical trials confirmed that early use of the drugs extended the lives of people with HIV and reduced the risk of transmitting it to their partners.

All people at "substantial" risk of contracting HIV should also be given preventive anti-retroviral treatment, not just men who have sex with men, it said.

The unfolding Syrian refugee tragedy at a glance

by Elizabeth Ferris and Kemal Kirişci on Sep 30, 2015, 11:52 AM

turkey syrian refugeesSince Elizabeth Ferris’ and Kemal Kirişci’s initial visit to Turkey in October 2013 to research the extent and impact of the Syrian refugee crisis on the country, the scale of displacement has increased dramatically.

At that time, there were around two million refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey. Today, this figure has climbed to more than 4 million and the estimates of the number of internally displaced persons have increased from around 4.2 million to 7.6 million.

More than half of the population of Syria is displaced and in dire need of humanitarian assistance.

In addition to the significant increase in numbers, there are three striking differences between the refugee situation today and that of October 2013:

• The ethnic and religious background of the refugees has become much more diverse.
• The politics of receiving Syrian refugees has also dramatically changed.
• The worsening refugee crisis has deepened the social, economic, and political problems that were already visible in October 2013.

For Turkey, managing the presence of now two million refugees has not been an easy task—even for a country with significant administrative and economic capacity.

The greatest and possibly the toughest problem has to do with the long run. What is still lacking is a comprehensive governmental policy towards integration. Burden-sharing is also critical in terms of legitimizing the expenses of the government in the eyes of the Turkish public by showing that caring for the refugees is an international responsibility.

The sudden surge in refugees should be a wake-up call for the international community to recognize its failure to share the burden with Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey, and that the current humanitarian system is in some disorder. Ultimately, the solution to the Syrian displacement crisis is a political one demanding the settlement of the violent conflict in the country. Unfortunately, the international community is far from arriving at such a settlement.
