| Drone delivery services will need to win consumers' trust Nicholas Shields | October 06, 2016 Want to receive more charts, research, reports, and data from BI Intelligence? Learn More Now » From pizza chains to logistics providers, companies that make deliveries are very excited about drones. Pilot programs in the US and around the world suggest that drone delivery services are only waiting for a green light from lawmakers and regulators to take flight. But it remains to be seen whether consumers are ready, and their enthusiasm will play a crucial role in drone delivery's success. Domino's is already testing drones in New Zealand, and a recent YouGov survey about consumer attitudes toward drone-delivered pizza were relatively encouraging. Forty-nine percent of respondents said they'd trust a drone to deliver a pizza on time, and 47% believed a drone would be able to find the delivery address. More than three in 10 expressed confidence that the order will arrive undamaged, that the pizza would hot, and that there wouldn't be any problems with handing off the order. This reflects a pretty high level of confidence in an unproven delivery method. Amazon was the most trusted company to run a drone delivery service in the US, with 38% of Americans saying they trusted them, according to the same survey. The US Postal Service (23%), Google (20%), and Walmart (19%) followed. Google and Amazon are already conducting drone delivery tests. Similarly, Walmart is currently using drones in its warehouses to track inventory and is planning to test drone deliveries in the future. However, 39% of Americans indicate that they would not trust any commercial drone delivery service. A recent study conducted in Australia showed that most drone malfunctions are due to technical problems within the drone and not operator error. Consumers are concerned about whether the drone would damage or ruin their food through movement or vibrations during the delivery process, a concern that officials have expressed about the delivery of medical supplies as well. To win over wary consumers, logistics providers, tech companies, and retailers will have to prove their drone delivery technology is reliable.
