1. Play the long game.

Patrick Byrne, CEO of Overstock.com and tZERO

I met Warren Buffett when I was 13 years old. My father worked at GEICO, and Buffett bought a sizable portion of the company. He occasionally visited our house, and his advice transformed how I thought about business at a young age.

Through a handful of conversations, Buffett taught me to run a business like you'll own it forever. Buffett only buys a share of company stock if he would still make the same decision during a market crash. He taught me to never "chase things" in the marketplace. Instead, make long-term decisions that will withstand the test of time.

2. Hold forever.

One of my favorite Warren Buffett quotes is: "Our favorite holding period is forever." This means if you don't feel comfortable owning a stock for more than 10 years, you shouldn't hold it for 10 minutes.

I like to translate this to real estate: the beauty of income-building real estate is that it reduces debt over time and tends to double in price every 10 years. This builds indestructible, long-term wealth that services the property. Buffett’s principle of "holding good investments forever," forever changed my finances.

3. Culture first.

I've been fortunate enough to visit Necker Island and spend time with Richard Branson on a half-dozen occasions. Everything I've learned from him has been a significant lesson.

All of Branson's businesses are built around culture first. He preaches fun, trust, and execution. He preaches vision: without a long-term plan, being an entrepreneur on a day-to-day basis can take a huge mental toll. He preaches giving back and being a good human. Branson treats everyone as an equal. I don't think I've ever seen him treat anyone disrespectfully.

What's all that add up to? Build a business that puts others first and does good; have fun doing it and don't get a big head.
