President Donald Trump spent the weekend in Washington, rather than at his Palm Beach estate, where he had planned to celebrate the anniversary first year in office with friends and supporters. In Washington instead, he rode out the first days of the federal government shutdown.

After shooting off several early morning tweets, Trump spent Saturday between the White House residence and the Oval Office, speaking with his top advisers, Cabinet members, and Republican leadership about the impact of the shutdown, The New York Times reported

"This is the One Year Anniversary of my Presidency and the Democrats wanted to give me a nice present. #DemocratShutdown," he tweeted

Rather than attending the Mar-a-Lago party, where guests were charged $100,000 per couple to attend an extravagant party, Trump watched TV coverage featuring the shutdown, which went into effect at 12:01 am on Saturday after Republican and Democratic leadership failed to come to an agreement on immigration, and the Women's March, which featured protests against the president and his administration across the country.

Upset and frustrated, the president spent part of Saturday watching TV clips of himself from 2013 criticizing President Barack Obama's handling of the last government shutdown, according to a presidential aide who spoke with the Times. Back in 2013, Trump argued that the shutdown was a result of a lack of presidential leadership.

"Problems start from the top, and they have to get solved from the top, and the president's the leader, and he's got to get everybody in a room, and he's got to lead," Trump told "Fox & Friends" in September 2013.
