North Korea had been threatening to withdraw from the summit itself, but Trump pulled the plug on it on Thursday, and now Pyongyang says it will meet any time. This marks a major departure form Wednesday, when North Korea offered Trump the ultimatum of meeting for talks or a "nuclear-to-nuclear showdown." President Donald Trump has recieved an answer to the letter he sent to Kim Jong Un on Thursday canceling the planned summit between the two leaders, and he's pleased with North Korea's response. "Very good news to receive the warm and productive statement from North Korea. We will soon see where it will lead, hopefully to long and enduring prosperity and peace. Only time (and talent) will tell!" Trump tweeted. Within 12 hours of Trump cancelling the summit with Kim, North Korea issued a statement that seemed to walk back some of the harsh criticism that Trump cited as his cause to exit the summit. Instead of saying North Korea would reconsider the summit due to complaints about US statements or military drills with South Korea, as it had for a week or so prior, media from Pyongyang on Friday said it would be willing to meet the US "at any time," while expressing "great regret" that Trump wouldn't show. This marks a major departure form Wednesday, when North Korea offered Trump the ultimatum of meeting for talks or a "nuclear-to-nuclear showdown." Trump's letter to North Korea canceled the summit, but left the door open for future talks and told Kim to write or call at any time. Generally speaking, most experts assessed that calling off the summit was the right move, as North Korea had made it clear that it did not intend to denuclearize, and that's the US's sole focus in talks with Pyongyang.
