NEW CHART: Digital Health

Voice could make waves in healthcare thanks to strong consumer interest — here's where we think voice in health is headed in 2020…

US consumers are getting on board with voice tech's extension into healthcare — which could be a good sign to providers looking to edge into voice, as investing in the tech could translate into significant patient use.

A few early moving healthcare providers are already cashing in on consumers' interest in voice for health — here are two examples of high-value applications where US health systems can apply the tech:
  • Health systems Providence St. Joseph and Atrium Health are taking advantage of Amazon's Alexa to link patients with urgent care and schedule appointments on-demand. Both health systems were among the first class of healthcare firms enlisted by Amazon to build novel skills when the tech giant's voice assistant earned eligibility for HIPAA compliance in April 2019.
  • Miami-based medical center EliteHealth partnered with AI-enabled voice tech company Care Angel to build a virtual nurse for monitoring senior patients remotely. The assistant monitors and communicates patient health data to physicians via real-time notifications — and it's producing impressive results: The platform saved EliteHealth $40 per patient per month — shoring up a grand total of $496,000.
  • We think we'll see healthcare voice tech upstarts expand their footprints on the backs of investors in the year ahead. Vidya Murthy — healthcare security firm MedCrypt's VP of operations — recently told us that she thinks voice-activated tech in healthcare will become a hotbed for funding, saying "from medication adherence to post-operative follow up, the ability to remotely check in on patient behavior in a mechanism that is increasingly 'easy' to interact will be heavily invested in next year."
