Fully understand how retailers can keep up with Amazon this holiday season
| NEW CHART & DATA: E-COMMERCE | | Amazon dominated Thanksgiving weekend, but competitors still performed well… Amazon was online shoppers' top choice from Black Friday through Cyber Monday, grabbing the biggest share of the highly successful Thanksgiving weekend. In an informal survey of Business Insider readers, we found that 42% of respondents used Amazon for most of their online purchases between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. | | | * This chart was delivered to BI Intelligence's Ultimate E-Commerce Research Bundle subscribers. | In spite of Amazon's clout, its competitors also enjoyed strong performances. Best Buy, Target, and Walmart were the top non-Amazon choices for those surveyed, with 7%, 5%, and 5% of respondents selecting these options, respectively. And, on Cyber Monday, all three saw positive revenue changes year-over-year (YoY), with Target's and Walmart's growth rates in the double digits at 19% and 32%, respectively, according to data from Edison Trends shared with Business Insider Intelligence.
However, the period between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is less critical to total holiday shopping than it used to be. Of the days between the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday, Thanksgiving itself was the one that saw the highest online sales growth acceleration, leaping from 18% growth last year to 28% this year. Since our survey specifically asked about online shopping between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, many of those responding that they did not shop may have simply done so before Black Friday. Additionally, holiday shopping is far from over, as 82% of consumers said that they still have some purchases left to make. And 58% said that they have yet to do more than half of their holiday shopping.
