Online game 'Apex Legends' hits 50 million users faster than 'Fortnite' did…

Apex Legends, a new battle royale-style "shooter" is growing faster than Fortnite — the most succesful game in recent history — in its early days. Apex Legends hit 10 million players after just three days of its release, and 25 million after just one week. That level of traction took Fortnite two weeks and three months, respectively, to achieve. And now, just 28 days after launch, Apex Legends has reached 50 million players. While Fortnite didn't report when it hit the 50 million mark, it took the game 112 days to reach even 40 million users.

Whether or not Apex Legends will eventually surpass Fortnite in overall user count depends on its performance in two aspects:
  • Its ability to translate initial excitement into sustained engagement among its user base. Part of Apex Legend's initial success might be its appeal to an older crowd compared with the catoon-based Fortnite, which may have enabled it to tap an underserved segment of the market. But to maintain success, Apex Legends will need to not only continue adding users, but sustain user commitment over time, as Fortnite has done. "It's a question of the publisher's ability to drive engagement beyond that initial excitement," Will Hershey, CEO of Roundhill Investments, an esports-focused investment firm, told Business Insider Intelligence. One lever to generate such excitement is through frequent in-game updates, like Fortnite's ongoing addition of new challenges, for instance. Fortnite's prominence has also been driven by its social component, as it has managed to become the gold standard on streaming platform Twitch: Fortnite is the most-watched game on the platform, taking a 12.1% share of average weekly viewership over the past week. Apex Legends has risen to third place in its month-long existence, accounting for 9.6% of average weekly viewership in the past week — its ability to maintain or grow that share will be key to its staying power.
