Internet users in most countries are increasingly turning to Facebook to find, post, read, share, or discuss news, according to a recent study conducted by Oxford University's Reuters Institute. The study, which tracked respondents' news consumption habits over a one-week period in 2014 and 2015, found that in four out of the six countries polled, the share of users who consumed news on Facebook increased in the past year. Only in Germany and Japan did the share of respondents who consume news on Facebook decline from last year.

  • Denmark boasted the largest share of respondents who consume news on Facebook. This year, 44% of internet users polled accessed or engaged with news on Facebook. The country also showed the greatest jump in the share of respondents that used Facebook for news, increasing 13 percentage points from last year.
  • On the other hand, Japan had the smallest share of respondents who receive or engage with news on Facebook. Only 11% of those polled in Japan received news on Facebook this year, down one percentage point from last year.
  • Germany also lost a share of users who turned to Facebook for news. While nearly a quarter of those polled in Germany used Facebook for news consumption this year, this share declined three percentage points from last year.
  • The share of those who turn to the social platform for news in the US only slightly increased. 37% of respondents used Facebook for news last year. That share grew three percentage points, to reach 40% this year.
