  • Viewers had a largely positive reaction to President Donald Trump's State of the Union address.
  • Three out of four respondents to a CBS poll said they approved of Trump's speech.
  • In a CNN poll, seven in 10 said they had a positive reaction to his remarks.

Those who tuned in for President Donald Trump's inaugural State of the Union address left overwhelmingly liking the speech, polls showed.

A CBS News poll found that 75% of those who watched Trump's speech, which was filled with themes of unity, approved of the address. Just 25% said they disapproved of the speech. Asked about how the speech made the viewer feel, 65% said they felt proud after watching the address, with 35% saying it made them feel safer. Another 14% said it made them feel scared while 21% said it made them angry.

Among viewers, 42% identified as Republicans while 25% identified as Democrats. Another 33% said they were independents.

Meanwhile, a CNN snap poll following the speech found that 70% of viewers had a positive reaction to the speech, with 48% saying they had a very positive response to Trump's address.

Trump touted his first-year achievements during the speech, such as the Republican tax law and his efforts to reshape the federal judiciary. He also made calls for revitalizing US infrastructure and passing an immigration reform package.

More than six in 10 respondents to the CNN poll said the policies Trump outlined would move the country in the right direction, with 35% saying they would take the country backwards.

However, just 42% of respondents said they were confident the president is capable of carrying out his presidential duties.
