NFL insider Adam Schefter says Jon Gruden will be the next coach of the Oakland Raiders

  • ESPN's NFL insider Adam Schefter says Jon Gruden will return to coaching as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders.
  • The Raiders fired head coach Jack Del Rio earlier in the day.
  • It will take some time for the deal to become official, but according to Schefter, "it's simple, you don't make that move with Jack Del Rio unless you know you can get Jon Gruden."
  • The deal also include an ownership stake in the team, but that would need to be approved.

It sounds like Jon Gruden is really coming back to coaching this time and it will happen with a team he is quite familiar with, the Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders fired head coach Jack Del Rio earlier on Sunday after the team finished a disappointing 6-10. According to NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN, Gruden will be the next head coach of the Oakland Raiders.

"It's simple, you don't make that move with Jack Del Rio unless you know you can get Jon Gruden," Schefter said on ESPN. "Jon Gruden is going to be the next coach of the Oakland Raiders. The only question is when it happens."

While the deal is not official yet, Schefter, along with Chris Mortensen, reported earlier on Sunday that the Raiders planned to aggressively pursue Gruden. According to their sources, Gruden would be "tempted to accept" the offer and that it could even include an ownership stake in the team.

It should also be noted that Gruden currently works for ESPN and presumably Schefter would not make such a proclamation with some assurance that the report was accurate.

You can see Schefter's comments here:

If the Raiders do offer Gruden an ownership stake, there is a huge catch — it must be approved by other NFL owners and there is a good reason to think they would be reluctant to do so.

One ownership source told ESPN that the owners "might not be so quick to approve the deal" because they wouldn't want to set a precedent. According to Schefter and Mortensen, the deal could be structured in a way that would compensate Gruden if the ownership portion were not approved.

Also on Sunday, Scott Bair of NBC Sports Bay Area asked Raiders owner Mark Davis about the initial ESPN report saying the team would pursue Gruden. According to Bair, Davis "played coy" when asked about Gruden.

"Just ran into Raiders owner Mark Davis," Bair wrote on Twitter. "Asked directly about about ESPN report re: interest in Jon Gruden. He played coy. Said focus is on winning next game. Asked about Del Rio's job status. Wouldn't touch it. Asked again about Gruden report: 'these rumors come about every year'"

Kim Jong Un touts 'nuclear button' on his desk, taunts the US in New Year's Day message

by Soyoung Kim and Josh Smith on Dec 31, 2017, 9:18 PM

  • North Korean leader Kim Jong Un claimed the US will never be able to start a war against North Korea, in a New Year's Day message taunting the US.
  • "The entire United States is within range of our nuclear weapons, and a nuclear button is always on my desk." he said.
  • North Korea conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test in September.

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said on Monday that the United States will never be able to start a war against North Korea now that his country has developed the capability to hit all of the U.S. mainland with its nuclear weapons.

"The entire United States is within range of our nuclear weapons, and a nuclear button is always on my desk. This is reality, not a threat," Kim said during a televised New Year’s Day speech.

"This year we should focus on mass producing nuclear warheads and ballistic missiles for operational deployment," Kim said. "These weapons will be used only if our security is threatened."

North Korea tested intercontinental ballistic missiles and conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test in September in defiance of international warnings and sanctions, raising fears of a new conflict on the Korean peninsula.

Kim said it is imperative to lower military tensions on the Korean peninsula and improve ties with the South, adding the path to dialogue was open.

Kim said he will consider sending a delegation to the Winter Olympics Games to be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in February.

"North Korea's participation in the Winter Games will be a good opportunity to show unity of the people and we wish the Games will be a success. Officials from the two Koreas may urgently meet to discuss the possibility," Kim said.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has said North Korea's participation will ensure safety of the Pyeongchang Olympics and proposed last month that Seoul and Washington postpone large military drills that the North denounces as a rehearsal for war until after the Games.

Raiders fire coach Jack Del Rio opening door for possible return of Jon Gruden

  • The Oakland Raiders have fired Jack Del Rio.
  • The Raiders were a popular preseason pick to be a contender in the AFC, but fell to 6-10 this season.
  • The firing will add more fuel to the speculation of Jon Gruden returning to the Raiders.

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — Oakland Raiders coach Jack Del Rio was fired Sunday after his third year when the impressive turnaround job he engineered for his hometown team collapsed with a disappointing six-win season.

Del Rio said owner Mark Davis told him after the team's season-ending 30-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday that he would not be retained as coach in Oakland. Del Rio had signed a four-year contract extension last February after Oakland ended a 13-year playoff drought with a 12-win season.

The Raiders followed that up by becoming one of the league's disappointing teams. Oakland went 6-10 for the second biggest one-season drops in wins in franchise history, leading to Del Rio's firing and raising speculation that former coach Jon Gruden could be in line for a second stint as Raiders coach.

Gruden was traded by the Raiders to Tampa Bay following the 2001 season and beat Oakland for the Super Bowl title the following season. He was fired by the Buccaneers following the 2008 season and has been in the broadcast booth since then. ESPN reported Saturday that the Raiders were interested in bringing Gruden back.

Davis has always been intrigued about a second stint with Gruden but it seemed unlikely the franchise would be in for another change heading into this season. Del Rio had been the ninth coach in Oakland since Gruden left but the only one to get the team to the playoffs.

He took over a three-win team in 2015 and immediately changed the culture and helped Oakland win seven games that season. The Raiders had a breakthrough season in 2016 with 12 wins but it ended in disappointment when a broken leg for quarterback Derek Carr in Week 16 cost the Raiders a chance at a division title and led to a first-round playoff loss.

Expectations were high coming into this year with Carr and most of the key offensive pieces back, along with the addition of running back Marshawn Lynch and tight end Jared Cook.

But Del Rio's decision to fire coordinator Bill Musgrave after last season despite a dynamic offense and replace him with quarterbacks coach Todd Downing backfired.

The offense regressed significantly this season as Carr struggled under Downing's tutelage and the defense showed no signs of improvement before firing coordinator Ken Norton Jr. after 10 games.

The Raiders had major drops in scoring (26 to 18.8), yards per game (373.3 to 324.1) and committed twice as many turnovers (14 to 28) this season as Carr took a major step back in his development after signing a $125 million, five-year extension in the offseason.

The defense became the first in NFL history to fail to record on interception in the first 10 games of the season and generated only 14 takeaways all season compared to 30 in 2016.

That all led to the decision to fire Del Rio, whose 187 games as a head coach are the most for anyone without a division title in his career.

Ravens eliminated from playoffs after Bengals score on miracle fourth-down play in final seconds

by Tyler Lauletta on Dec 31, 2017, 8:21 PM

  • The Ravens were eliminated from the playoffs in the final seconds of their matchup against the Bengals, giving up the lead late in the game on a long fourth down conversion.
  • The Ravens loss pushed the Bills into the playoffs for the first time since 1999, ending the longest postseason drought in the NFL.
  • With the playoff bracket set, the postseason kicks off this weekend with the Wild Card round.

The Baltimore Ravens entered Sunday with a 94% chance of making the playoffs, but after falling to the Cincinnati Bengals in the final seconds of their game on Sunday, they'll be watching the postseason from home in 2018, and Buffalo Bills fans could not be happier.

The Ravens path to the playoffs was simple — win and they're in. As 10-point favorites at home against the Bengals, that was the path most expected they would take. But even if the Ravens lost, they would still qualify for the postseason as long as either the Titans or the Bills lost their matchups on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Bills entered Sunday with just a 17% chance of making the postseason, needing a win over the Dolphins and a loss from the Ravens. As the final games of the regular season came to a close, the Bills had taken care of their part of the bargain, but were still on the outside of the playoff race looking in, with the Ravens leading the Bengals by 27-24 in the final minute of the game.

The Bills knew they needed a bit of help from the Bengals.

The Ravens needed just one more stop to punch their ticket to the postseason. With just 51 seconds left, it looked like the deed was all but done — the Ravens defense had forced Andy Dalton and the Bengals, with nothing but pride and spite towards Baltimore to play for, into fourth-and-12 from midfield.

But the Bengals would not go quiet into that good night. Dalton dropped back and found Tyler Boyd for the first down, and eventually the touchdown, thrusting Cincinnati into the lead.

The Bengals would hold on to win 31-27, ending the Ravens season and helping the Bills end the longest active playoff drought in the NFL.

And with that dramatic turn, the NFL regular season came to a close. The playoff bracket is set, and there's only more chaos to come when the Wild Card round starts next week.

Buckle up.

The NFL playoff bracket is now set

by Cork Gaines on Dec 31, 2017, 8:03 PM

We know all 12 seeds for when the NFL playoffs begin next weekend.

In the NFC, the Atlanta Falcons clinched the final playoff spot with a win over the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers had already clinched a playoff spot, but their loss means they will be the other NFC Wild Card team and the New Orleans Saints are NFC South champs.

In the AFC, things were more complicated heading into Week 17, but the Tennessee Titans took care of business by winning on Sunday to clinch one Wild Card spot. Meanwhile, the Baltimore Ravens blew a lead in the final minute against the Cincinnati Bengals, giving the final Wild Card spot to the Buffalo Bills.

We already knew the Philadelphia Eagles would be the top seed in the NFC with home-field advantage. Meanwhile, the New England Patriots sealed the top seed in the AFC on Sunday with a win over the New York Jets. The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Minnesota Vikings also earned byes in the first round by being the 2-seeds in their respective conferences.
