- Artificial intelligence and technological advancements are changing the job landscape.
- Jobs that kids will have in the future as adults don't even exist yet.
- To best prepare them for success, they should learn a number of different skills — like coding, data analytics, science, and communications.
As parents, we want many things for our children including health, happiness, and a secure financial future. As technology advances, however, thousands of jobs are being threatened by machines and artificial intelligence, and it's become more difficult to know how to prepare our children to succeed in an uncertain future. The plain truth is that the majority of the careers our children will pursue don't even exist yet. So how do we prepare our children for those high-paying careers, when we don't know what they will look like? Luckily, there are clues as to where the jobs are going, and your children can get ready for those jobs by focusing on specific areas of study. Here are seven things your child should study now to prepare them for a high-paying, robot-proof job in the future. 1. Coding According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, software engineering jobs will grow 18.8 percent between now and 2024, while computer systems analyst jobs will increase 20.9 percent. Computer scientists are driving the future. Even if their job doesn't require them to write code, your child will need at least a basic understanding of computer science no matter their career. Developing this interest early on will prepare your child and allow them to keep up with an advancing world. But beyond the job opportunities for computer scientists, studying code teaches children skills that will be fundamental to all career paths. Creativity, attention to detail, and structure will be as necessary as computer science knowledge in the jobs of tomorrow. 2. Data Analytics Our world is run by data. Corporations like Google and Amazon churn out unimaginably massive quantities of data, and those who can make sense of that information can pinpoint trends and correlations that are valuable to such companies. The number of data analyst jobs is expected to grow by 30 percent over the next seven years. Anyone who can analyze large amounts of data and produce critical insights on how people make decisions, will have a secure place in the future job market. 3. Math In the age of big data, math is equally critical to career success. Business leaders know that the higher you rise in a company, the more your job will involve math as it relates to finance, data analysis, and accounting. Mathematics teaches children more than equations and functions, however. It instills in them logic, critical thinking, and problem solving, all of which drive the business models of successful companies. If your child hopes to succeed in the jobs of tomorrow, they will require a strong foundation in mathematics. 4. Humanities/liberal Arts Robots and artificial intelligence are already replacing hundreds of jobs every year, and the jobs that are most at risk are those that entail technical and repetitive tasks, such as accounting and data entry. Professions that require high levels of creativity, people management, and critical thinking are more difficult to replace with artificial intelligence. If your child hopes to find a secure financial future, they must be able to think critically and creatively, and they will develop that ability through a liberal arts education. Humanities teaches students to think creatively, work with people, and have strong personal judgment, all of which are irreplaceable skills. 5. Science Science has never been more exciting, and scientific breakthroughs are happening at lightning speed. To stay on the forefront of these rapid advancements, children must have the ability to navigate the processes and skills of STEM education. Your child may not be med school bound, but a foundation in the scientific method will prepare them for an array of careers. Science teaches kids important techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, and correcting/integrating previous knowledge. These skills are invaluable for anyone who hopes to grow within their career path. 6. Finance There are strong career prospects in investing and banking, but in addition to these opportunities the skills developed through financial education are used at the highest levels of business organizations. C-level executives rely on the economic knowledge accrued in financial education. As previously stated, tasks like accounting are already being automated. But financial literacy is still vital for everyone who wishes to not only make money, but keep it. 7. Communications Having the skills, technical knowledge, and working ability in all the above areas is important, but knowing how to converse and communicate these ideas to others is absolutely necessary. As stated before, artificial intelligence will not be able to easily replace human interaction, and having the communication skills to interact with others is essential. From nailing an interview, to explaining high concept ideas to others, communications is one key area of study that should not be overlooked.
