As modern children are exposed to the digital world at earlier ages than they were years ago, there is sometimes an assumption that kids are now spending more time on their smart devices than on the playground.

The term 'digital native' is thrown around in dialogue to imply that today's youth is predisposed to be adept at using technology. But children are not necessarily being given access to the defining device of the digital era: the smartphone.
  • We estimate that 11.9% of kids 11 and younger will have a smartphone this year. This smartphone figure is markedly lower than internet user penetration for that age group, which we estimate at 69.1%. Thus, most kids who are internet users don't have smartphones.
  • Older kids are naturally more likely than younger ones to have smartphones. In Common Sense polling in March and April 2019, 53% of kids ages 8 to 12 had a smartphone by age...
