How Amazon's new Alexa-powered solution may help patients, seniors, and healthcare workers

Voice Assistant Users, US, 2021-2025

Amazon is rolling out a new healthcare solution called Alexa Smart Properties, which leverages its voice assistant to enable healthcare providers and patients to easily communicate with each other from separate rooms.

The company's interest in healthcare is nothing new, as Amazon first started building out its Alexa-based health and wellness capabilities back in 2018, and released the Care Hub feature in November 2020 to help caregivers monitor seniors. However, Amazon's decision to roll out this more advanced healthcare solution suggests that it intends to dig deeper into the senior care space.

As loneliness afflicts many older adults and is connected to poorer health outcomes, it makes sense that Alexa has already started integrating the voice assistant into senior living communities like the Atria, so that its residents can easily get in touch with their loved ones. This new solution will also allow them to use voice commands to perform basic tasks, including changing a TV channel or requesting a caregiver.

This technology may also help free up time for hospital staff and minimize clinician burnout, which many are grappling with. In fact, American Nurses Foundation's One Year COVID-19 Impact survey found that 47% of nurses said that burnout is a top reason for wanting to leave their position.

In addition, older age groups (55+) use Alexa more than any other voice assistant on the market.
