Cityblock Health—an emerging primary care provider focused on social determinants of health (SDOH)—recently partnered with health maintenance organization MDwise. This tie-up will allow Cityblock to expand its primary care footprint to Indiana, while helping the insurer deliver primary care, mental healthcare, and social services to predominantly Medicaid and lower-income Medicare beneficiaries.
While 95% of physicians believe that SDOH is important to address, per an April 2022 Physicians Foundation survey, many don't have the time or resources to do this effectively. What's more, according to that same survey, 83% of the physicians polled have experienced burnout as a result of attempting to support SDOH.
Insurers—including Tufts Health Plan, CareFirst, and EmblemHealth—have also recently joined the list of companies teaming up with Cityblock. Looking ahead, we may see more insurers partner with Cityblock or similar entrants. This will allow "in-network physicians to outsource their SDOH work to community partners, rather than overextend themselves," said Erum Ahmed, analyst at Insider Intelligence. | |
