The stop-and-go self-driving feature enables the Tesla car to drive itself in traffic jams by monitoring the lane ahead and stopping and accelerating in traffic. Tesla had been beta-testing autopilot features since mid-August, according to Autoblog. - 42,541 Tesla Model S' and Model X's shipped after October 2014 have hardware components that are compatible with the software update.
- However, the owners of the compatible vehicles will have to pay an additional $2,500 for the update, according to the Tesla website cited by Tech Insider. This means that only a percentage of the owners will opt for the new autopilot features.
Interestingly, only 29% of Americans said they would be willing to pay a premium for automated driving functionalities in their next car, according to a McKinsey survey. Contrastingly, 70% of Chinese consumers said they would be willing to pay a premium for automated driving functionalities. This aligns well with Tesla's strategy in Asia: Tesla announced that orders in China had nearly doubled from Q1 2015 to Q2 2015, and it planned to increase its investments in China by growing from one to five retail stores, according to a shareholder letter. A bigger foothold in China could mean a larger customer base that's willing to pay for the added autonomous features Tesla expects to continually roll out. BI Intelligence estimates that nearly 104,000 cars will be shipped this year with the stop-and-go autopilot feature. This feature will continue to be the most prevalent self-driving car feature available to the public over the next five years. However, we expect several other features to be released to the public over the next five years, including remote valet assist, highway autopilot with automatic lane changing, and a user-operated self-driving car.
