Ted Cruz (R-Texas), a day ahead of the Iowa caucuses. In a series of tweets Sunday morning, Trump slammed Cruz for sending out campaign mailers telling Republicans that they were in "voting violation" for not participating in past elections. "The Cruz campaign issued a dishonest and deceptive get out the vote ad calling voters 'in violation.' They are now under investigation. Bad!" Trump tweeted. The mogul also reiterated several criticisms that he's leveled at Cruz in recent weeks, as the two candidates have battled for victory in the first-caucus state of Iowa. He suggested the senator was not electable in November's general election and that he misled voters by failing to disclose loans from Goldman Sachs and Citibank during his 2012 Senate run: Ted Cruz is totally unelectable, if he even gets to run (born in Canada). Vander Plaats endorsed Cruz for president. Trump claimed that Vander Plaats only endorsed Cruz to spite Trump for not compensating the influential conservative activist's hotel room and refusing to pay him $100,000 to show up at an event.  .@bobvanderplaats is a total phony and dishonest guy. He said during a CNN interview Sunday that Trump skipped Thursday's Republican debate because he was too afraid to field questions about how he has changed positions on key issues. "Donald did not want his record challenged. It's the same reason actually that Donald engages in insults. Because he can't defend his substantive record," Cruz said. During the interview, Cruz also drew comparisons between Trump and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), the Democratic presidential candidate, on healthcare. He also asserted that Trump supported President Barack Obama's 2009 stimulus bill.
