In June 2015, total digital media usage nearly doubled from two years earlier; this was largely bolstered by the incredible 90% increase in consumption of media on mobile apps. As a note, comScore considers mobile to include both tablets and smartphones. Here are some key takeaways of the data: - Time spent consuming digital media increased across the board. Although mobile apps exhibited by far the largest growth over two years, consumption via desktop grew 16%, and consumption via mobile browser grew 53%.
- Mobile apps surpassed desktop as the leader in digital media usage. Total time spent consuming digital media via mobile apps reached close to 779 billion minutes, compared to nearly 551 billion minutes via PCs.
- Mobile accounted for almost two out of every three minutes spent consuming digital media. Mobile, including apps and browsers, accounted for 62% of time spent on digital media, whereas desktop accounted for 38%. Mobile apps in particular accounted for 54% of total digital media time spent.
- Smartphones are the device of choice for consuming digital media on mobile devices. Smartphones accounted for 71% of the total time users spent consuming digital media on mobile devices (including both mobile apps and mobile desktops) and 44% of the total time users spent consuming digital media, overall.
