YouTube received nearly 170 million unique desktop video viewers in September, which was almost 80 million more unique video viewers than Facebook garnered during the month, according to comScore data.

Google's YouTube has faced increased competition in the realm of online video, as established digital media platforms like Facebook and Yahoo look to capture increasing video audiences and ad dollars. But so far, this competition has not chipped away at the size of YouTube's PC-based audience.

  • YouTube and other Google sites boasted more than 168 million unique desktop video viewers in September. This marked a 12.5% increase in video viewers from September 2014. However, desktop video views on Google properties have remained largely flat in the past few months. This could be a result of YouTube's increasing investment in its mobile app, which it redesigned in July to support vertical video. Mobile and not desktop is becoming the go-to place for online video consumption.
  • Facebook attracted almost 91.5 million unique desktop video viewers in September, a decline of nearly 7% year-over-year (YoY). While Facebook lags behind YouTube considerably on desktop, it has admittedly focused on building out its mobile video platform. Nearly half of Facebook's 1.55 billion monthly active users are made up of mobile-only users. We estimate that Facebook's video growth on mobile is outpacing that of YouTube.
  • Yahoo claimed almost 62 million unique video viewers in September, a 4.5% YoY increase. This number will likely jump when ComScore releases its October data due to Yahoo's livestream of an NFL game, which was the first time an NFL game was live streamed for free on an online service.

While Google sites gain the most unique video viewers, its ad network falls behind in terms of video-advertising reach — the share of the US population that actually gets served desktop video ads from Google's ad network. AOL, Yahoo's BrightRoll, and Facebook's LiveRail each reached nearly 40% of the US population, while Google followed with nearly 31%.
