Here are the personal traits that make people most and least likely to support a candidate

by Andy Kiersz on Feb 1, 2016, 1:19 PM

The Pew Research Center recently released the results of a new survey on religion and the 2016 election. The report is full of interesting details about how Americans look at faith and the candidates.

One part of the survey asked voters how different personality traits would affect their support of a candidate. The biggest negative trait was not believing in God: 51% of respondents said they would be less likely to vote for an atheist, while just 6% would be more likely to vote for a candidate who didn't believe in God. (Meanwhile, 45% said it wouldn't matter.)

On the opposite end of the spectrum, military service is a boon for candidates: 50% of voters said they'd be more likely to vote for a candidate who served, compared to just 4% who said they'd be less likely.

Voters don't appear to care either way if a candidate is Jewish: A full 80% of respondents said that a candidate being Jewish would have no effect on their likelihood to vote for that candidate.

Here are the full results, with much more at Pew's site:

Intriguingly, even though more than half of voters said that they would be less likely to vote for a candidate who doesn't believe in God, Republican front-runner Donald Trump was viewed as the least religious of the candidates. A full 60% of respondents said that Trump was either "not too" or "not at all" religious, as can be seen in this chart from Pew:
