  • Sen. Elizabeth Warren blasted President Donald Trump after referring to her as "Pocahontas."
  • Trump's comments came at an event honoring Native American veterans.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Monday condemned President Donald Trump after he derisively called her "Pocahontas" during an event honoring Native American veterans.

At a White House event honoring Native American code talkers, Trump referenced Warren and dubbed on her the nickname, a label he has used repeatedly to describe her. The label references past accusations that she claimed Native American heritage without proof.

During an interview on MSNBC, the Massachusetts Democrat criticized Trump for using the nickname, which many Native Americans and some Republican officials have condemned.

"It is deeply unfortunate that the president of the United States cannot even make it through a ceremony honoring these heroes without having to throw out a racial slur," she said. "Donald Trump does this over and over thinking somehow he's going to shut me up with it. It hasn't worked in the past, it is not going to work in the future."
