Hi,

A hacker gained access to nearly 50 million Facebook user accounts by exploiting a weakness in the social network's systems, the social media giant announced mere hours ago.

"We face constant attacks from people who want to take over accounts or steal information around the world," Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a lenghty blog post discussing the situation.

This is more bad news for Facebook in a year marred by scandals involving user data. The infamous Cambridge Analytica story from earlier this year led to Zuckerberg''s testimony before Congress, and now it looks as though the CEO has another public relations nightmare to resolve.

But this is just the latest incident in a growing trend of data breaches, which we've been covering here at Business Insider Intelligence for years.

Over the past five years, the world has seen a seemingly unending series of high-profile data breaches. Major incidents, like the 2013 Yahoo breach (which impacted all 3 million of the tech giant's customers), the Equifax breach (which exposed the information of at least 143 million US adults), and Facebook's continual woes are bringing the data breach problem further and further into the public consciousness.

Fortunately, we've got the playbook to evaulate the vulnerabilities in today's tech landscape and create a game plan to protect you and your customers' data in our Data Breaches Report.
