Here are three ways that could affect content moderation on social platforms:
  • Immediately, platforms might need to police impeachment-related misinformation that could impact voter sentiment ahead of upcoming elections. High-stakes political events like elections or an impeachment proceeding offer fertile grounds for the spread of misinformation.
  • If Trump is ultimately removed from office, claims of anti-conservative bias on tech platforms would lose their most powerful proponent and could die down as a result. Allegations of anti-conservative bias won't disappear if Trump is removed: 64% of Republicans believe major tech companies favor liberals over conservatives, per Pew. The belief is also perpetuated by other prominent Republicans like Ted Cruz. Still, losing their most powerful and active advocate — President Trump — could diminish the influence of such claims.
  • Removing Trump from office might also allow for the arguments of those advocating for stricter social platform moderation to gain steam. Up until this point, many platforms have taken middle-of-the road approaches to content moderation, especially as it pertains to statements made by politicians: Twitter censors and demotes but doesn't remove politicians' remarks that violate its community guidelines, and Facebook will demote such comments, as long as they don't result in "real-world harm."
