| | Ebike sales increased 145% from 2019 to 2020, as people looked for new ways to get around while social distancing amid the pandemic. The S.2420 bill, which was recently introduced in the US Senate, has the potential to further boost ebike sales.
This bill would offer a 30% tax credit of up to $1,500 on the purchase of new electric bikes, to promote an environmentally friendly alternative to cars and reduce traffic within crowded cities. If these buyers can get similar incentives for ebikes to those given for electric vehicles, we could see a surge in US adoption rates.
However, the pandemic has also put a spotlight on infrastructure problems that exist within US cities that may not allow for safe cycling or a secure space to store bikes. This issue may need to be addressed before more drivers make the switch.
While subsidizing the cost of ebikes is a promising start, the government still tends to prioritize road projects over biking initiatives. If cities can make the improvements made to streetways during the pandemic more permanent, the ebike market could have a promising future.
