The pandemic has accelerated the digital transformation efforts of US health systems, which is in turn paving the way for smart hospitals across the country. The healthcare industry is notoriously slow to execute digital transformation strategies, but that all changed when the pandemic hit.

COVID-19 disruptions forced nearly every hospital and health system to ramp up digitization at scale, both in the US and abroad. The majority (81%) of healthcare executives worldwide said the pace of their organization's digital transformation was accelerating, per the Accenture study. Meanwhile, 60% of C-level healthcare executives in the US said their organization was adding new digital projects as a result of the pandemic, according to a January 2021 BDO USA survey conducted by the Rabin Research Company.

A common misconception within the industry is that the very deployment of digital solutions makes a hospital smart. For instance, Newsweek and Statista placed 15 US hospitals in their top 20 list of the world's best smart hospitals in 2021.
