President Donald Trump will not attend the boxing rules showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor, according to the boss of UFC.

Trump is a renowned fight fan. His love affair with the sport has spanned decades after he promoted Mike Tyson's 91-second knockout victory over Michael Spinks in Atlantic City, 1988.

More recently, Trump was ringside for Mayweather's record-breaking fight against Manny Pacquiao in 2015.

And earlier this month UFC boss Dana White said Trump was "interested" in attending the bout between Mayweather and his client McGregor.

It was a point Jimmy Kimmel raised on his chat show "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on Thursday. Kimmel asked White: "Is there any chance Donald Trump will come to this event?"

White said the president wanted to attend 'UFC 205 — Eddie Alvarez vs Conor McGregor' but was concerned he would "ruin" the New York City event with his security detail. The same could be true of Mayweather v McGregor's fight in Las Vegas on August 26.

"Donald was supposed to come to 205 but he said to me: 'Listen, I don't want to ruin your event… Secret Service will rip this place apart and streets would get shut down.'"

White then said "no." As with UFC 205, Trump won't attend Mayweather v McGregor.

White previously described Trump as "loyal and supportive of the UFC." He has also said Trump is a "loyal friend."

At a Republican convention in 2016, White said Trump played a key role in the development of the UFC.

"He hosted our first two events at [the Trump Taj Mahal], got in the trenches with us, and he made a deal that worked for everyone," White said.

"Donald championed the UFC before it was popular, before it grew into a successful business, and I will always be so grateful to him for standing with us in those early days."
