A recent study from NYU Langone Medical Center on the use of health apps in the US revealed that while health app downloads were high, continued use was relatively low. The National Survey of US Smartphone Owner Health App Usage Dataset tracked the results of 1,604 adult smartphone users, with an average age of 40. More than half (58%) of the respondents had downloaded at least one health app, with just less than 42% downloading five or more health apps.

The most frequently given reasons for downloading and discontinuing health apps included:

bii discontinued use of health app reasons

But around 46% said they had downloaded health apps that they no longer used. Respondents cited a number of reasons why they discontinued use, including that it took too long to enter data, they lost interest in the app, or that they discovered hidden costs.

Researchers identified three main areas for developers to address when considering future health apps:

  • Participants wanted their health apps to provide more specific and personalized recommendations. This includes things like providing suggested exercises or activities, more accurate meal planning, as well as easier to use methods for how to carry out diet plans.
  • Participants wanted all-in-one apps that could communicate with medical care systems. An example of this would be an app that could track vital statistics and immediately send the results off to medical care representatives. Around 57% of respondents noted that they would find this function helpful.
  • Participants wanted their health apps to provide better medical monitoring, health symptom tracking, and possibly additional functions such as the ability to make diagnostic suggestions.
