Businesses are collecting and analyzing data from their IoT devices to improve workflow. A key trend within the IoT has been the transition of data processing to an edge-computing model, in which data is processed where it is created rather than at a remote or cloud-based data center, minimizing costs by reducing network traffic and server usage. A new survey of IoT decision makers from IDC shows the recent trends in the adoption of edge computing.

  • Forty-three percent of companies that use IoT solutions engage in some form of edge computing, collecting and processing at least some of their data at the location where those data are created.
  • Twenty-nine percent of enterprises conduct all of their data processing at the edge, rather than relying upon any remote processing centers. This cuts down on the time required to implement gains and discoveries out of analytics, as there is no time lost in transmission. It further relieves the burden on communications networks, freeing up bandwidth and reducing costs for both network operators and enterprises.

Fifty-four percent of enterprises conduct all of their analytics at remote processing locations, a number we expect to shrink in coming years. This is a major development in the rise of edge computing within the IoT. In 2015, IDC projected that 45% of IoT devices would store, process, and analyze data at the edge by 2019. Based on these new survey results, however, it seems the transition to edge computing is accelerating as enterprises see and take advantage of the decreased costs and increased speed with which analytics can be employed and implemented.
