Apple Watch shipments grew 6.6% year-over-year in Q1 of 2022, propelling Apple to nearly 31% of wearables market share, per the International Data Corporation (IDC). While the tech giant has continued to grow its decade-long lead in the wearables space, Google recently debuted its new Pixel Watch, which could threaten Apple's dominance in the market.
Google has 131.3 million US Android users, ahead of Apple's 124.7 million US iOS users—according to the Insider Intelligence "Smartphone Users, US" forecast—which could offer Google a competitive advantage when launching its smartwatch. What's more, the Pixel Watch will promote Google-owned apps and services—including Google Maps—which will keep users within its own ecosystem.
Looking ahead, "Google's newly debuted Pixel watch could be a game changer if they can get customers on board," said Erum Ahmed, analyst at Insider Intelligence. That said, "Apple's huge lead in market share will undoubtedly make it difficult for other smartwatch vendors to catch up this year." | |
