Social media platforms—such as Twitter—have recently come under fire for allegedly having too many spam bots. While bot accounts can be helpful for automating certain tasks, "They can also be used for shady activities like get-rich-quick schemes that reduce platform trust," said Jeremy Goldman, analyst at Insider Intelligence.
In addition to bots, there have been other forms of fraud impacting the advertising, commerce, and media sectors. For example, the moderators of 10,000 Facebook groups are being accused of coordinating fake reviews in exchange for money or free products. This type of behavior could impact media firms if they greenlight the wrong projects based on inaccurate customer sentiment.
While we may see actors continue to write fake reviews for profit, businesses that take steps to guard against fraud and prove that their reviews are legitimate will be more likely to outperform their competitors. | |
