Alec Baldwin returned to "Saturday Night Live" as President Trump, and the cold opening didn't waste any time jumping into current events, including Puerto Rico and the NFL kneeling controversy.

The skit showed Baldwin taking a phone call with San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz (cast member Melissa Villasenor), who in real life has been calling on the Trump administration to do more to help with the hurricane recovery efforts on Puerto Rico — even as Trump has called her leadership ability into question.

True to the comedic and unflattering portrayal that won Baldwin an Emmy last season, before he began the conversation he said he expected Cruz to tell him how great he was doing.

But when he was repeatedly told that Puerto Rico needs urgent help, eventually he replied that Puerto Rico should have joined "FEMA Prime" for quicker assistance, a sly riff off of the Amazon Prime.

He also said: "Ma'am I don't know if you know this, but you're in the island in the water. The ocean water. Big ocean. With fishies, and bubbles and turtles that bite. We want to help you, but we have to take care of America first."

When informed that Puerto Rico is actually a territory of the U.S., Baldwin took a moment to express his shock before saying in a disingenuous fashion, "I mean I do, but not many people know that, no."

When he was told again that the people in Puerto Rico need help, Trump hung up and remarked, "wow, that woman was so nasty."

Also involved in the cold opening was Aidy Bryant as White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, Kate McKinnon reprising her role as Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and Alex Moffat as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

When the skit rolled into a back and forth between Baldwin and Moffat about NFL players who kneel during the national anthem.

"I'm a little embarrassed that I said it's a black-and-white issue," Bryant said. "I should have said it's a black-versus-white issue."

After calling the sitation "disgusting," Baldwin's Trump asserted that he could have played football but for not-so-great reasons.

"People say I remind them of an NFL player because I'm combative, I like to win, and I might have a degenerate brain disease," he explained.

McKinnon literally popped into the room and the Sessions recusal controversy took center stage.

"I should not have recused myself from the Comey calamity," McKinnon said in an exagerated southern accent. "I don't know, I got spooked."

Instead of McKinnon's initial thought that a whipping might be in order, Trump threatened something far worse: angry tweets.

"Those tweets are so powerful. You fear the tweets," he said.

However, the two eventually made up after McKinnon begged for forgiveness and Baldwin remarked on how the level of cuteness got to him and he allowed McKinnon to sit on his lap.

"Jeffy we'll get through this," Baldwin said.

"Thank you Mr. Trump, I will not let you down. I might look adorable but I'm frightening," McKinnon.

After Baldwin spoke about loyalty and said "you're my guy Jeff," McKinnon gave him a kiss on the head.

After that Moffat walked in and he and Trump spoke of a "secret deal" and the two hit it off as two New Yorkers with a lot in common.

"Sir are you really leaving with him?", asked McKinnon.

"I told you I'm nothing if not loyal," Baldwin replied. "Come over here Chuck. We're both New Yorkers, we both enjoy a good slice, we never go to Times Square, and we love saying ..." he added before the trio said together, queuing the opening credits: "live from New York it's Saturday night!"

The season 43 premiere had Ryan Gossling as the guest host and Jay Z as musical guest.
