  • New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a longtime supporter of President Donald Trump, cast doubt on whether the president will run for a second term.
  • Christie said if Trump runs, he will support him, but "I'm not so sure what will happen."

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie cast doubt on whether President Donald Trump will run for a second term, saying "four years is a long time" to spend in Washington as a political novice.

"If he runs again I would support him, yes, but I'm not so sure what will happen," Christie told NBC News host Matt Lauer during an interview that aired on Friday morning's "Today" show. "Four years is a long time, and especially for someone who has not spent a lifetime in politics, so I think those years affect him differently, so I'm sure the president will make whatever decision is best for him and his family and the county. If he runs again, absolutely I expect to be with him."

Christie reportedly turned down multiple positions in Trump's cabinet, in part because he was not offered the attorney general post, which he was reportedly promised.

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon recently said that Christie didn't get a cabinet position because of the governor's failure to support the president after the October 7 release of the "Access Hollywood" tape, in which Trump was recorded boasting about sexually assaulting women.

A handful of GOP politicians, including Ohio Gov. John Kasich and even Vice President Mike Pence, are seemingly already building shadow presidential campaigns, the New York Times reported in August
