Fully functional 5G networks will usher in innovation in products and services, but several hurdles to wide-scale deployment remain

Although 5G networks are expanding rapidly, many of the performance improvements are still in the future. Some countries now have networks that cover a majority of the population (even if only a fraction connect to them already), but performance improvements are still minor compared with peak 4G LTE. That will change piecemeal over the next few years, with throughput speeds and connection density improving first.

China accounts for the vast majority of current 5G users: Around 80% of the world's 220 million 5G users live in China, according to Ericsson. Even so, networks in South Korea have the best average performance, and the fastest current network is Verizon's Ultra Wideband in the US.
