More than 10 million US households have signed up for the FCC's Affordable Connectivity Program, an initiative which provides connectivity to underserved communities. The program offers lower-income customers $30 off their monthly internet services, or up to $75 off for those living on tribal lands, per Protocol.
That said, a number of issues have been exposed from carriers, such as forcing customers into more expensive plans once the subsidy ends as a condition of enrollment. "While affordability is the top concern for adults without broadband subscriptions, the fear and uncertainty of getting hit by surprise bills could further deter adoption," said Gadjo Sevilla, analyst at Insider Intelligence.
Looking ahead, the FCC's Affordable Connectivity Program will need outreach and closer monitoring to earn the confidence of underserved households and further encourage adoption. | |
