As Russian attacks on Ukraine continue to escalate, technology companies are choosing to cut ties with the country after doing decades worth of business there. For example, TikTok announced on Sunday that the platform will be temporarily restricting users in Russia from livestreaming and uploading new videos.
Russia has proposed solutions to counteract service shutdowns, such as "ending dependency on internet infrastructure hosted offshore and disconnecting from the global internet," said Gadjo Sevilla, analyst at Insider Intelligence. However, Russia's plan may backfire, as "breaking off from the global internet could cause widespread connectivity issues affecting all countries," said Sevilla. | |
